John Commins is an aspiring Journalist from Prince George’s County, Maryland. Currently a communications student at St. John’s University in Queens, John started Camp Blognaw to promote the work of his friends and other artists he admires. He hopes to one day write for publications such as Noisey or the Fader.

Name of the Brand:

Camp Blognaw is a play on words. The name is a combination of “Blog” and “Camp Flognaw.” Blogs played a big part inspiring me to first start writing. Blogs serve as a platform for anybody to express themselves and their interests through pictures, words, and various kinds of music.

Camp Flognaw is the festival run by Tyler, The Creator, former member of Odd Future. When I was in middle school, Tyler and Odd Future inspired me to be myself and shed my fear of expressing myself. I combined the two names to pay homage to things that inspired me to start my own collective, a place where I could promote both my interests and my friends.

Origin of Slogan: “Welcome to the Woods”

Before humans, Earth was entirely nature, a self-sufficient sphere of life. Humans come from nature, and nature will take over once again when we are gone.

Woods are unforgiving. They are like natural cities of their own, with animals, plants, trees, and foliage all coexisting in one habitat. Life can flourish in the woods, because they provide everything a plant or  animal needs. Being alone in the woods is an eerie experience similar to being a singular individual in a big city, trying to make it. The members featured on my blog are self-made. They dodge predators on their journey to the top like an animal in the woods. When you enter Camp Blognaw, you are entering the woods.
