TMK FEATURE

A producer in his own league out of Maryland, TMK is paving the way for the DMV with his starry and ambient, yet versatile beats. I recently sat down with him and now you all have the opportunity to learn more about him…

On Growing Up in the DMV

It was a lot of fun. It was always really diverse and I’m very grateful for that.

Work Ethic

I try to make at least one beat a day on average, and I balance that with school and work. I played a lot of sports like basketball, swimming and lacrosse, and that helped teach me to keep working at something to get better.

Biggest Inspirations

The first rap album I listened to was If You’re Reading This It's Too Late by Drake. Later on I found Lucki, and he’s who made me want to make beats. I loved his beats by BrentRambo and that style, so I started watching YouTube videos on how to produce. Doing it over and over is what got me better at it.

Another one of my favorite producers is Pierre Bourne. I think he’s the best producer and I love how he blends the songs on his projects together. My favorite song by him is Racer.

Percaholics

Back when I was first on Twitter, as prodbytmk, I was in a group chat with other underground artists, and NateNumbaEight sent a link to a discord called “Percaholics.” {Editor's Note: NateNumbaEight is a hilarious rapper viral for his impactful bars which often involve twitter memes} I joined the discord and became one of the producers in there who exchanged beats and worked together. Nate was getting on the beats pretty much every day and we made it a collective. We’re from everywhere: Nate’s from Florida and Maru (@maru48k on Twitter and Instagram) is from Michigan. We’re all doing our own thing, but we’re all still friends and we all still work together.

On the TMK sound

I want it to be unique. I haven’t found that perfect sound yet, but I’m always working towards it. I make ambient beats, glo beats, and plugg beats. I like all of them so why not make all of them.

What gets TMK out of bed in the morning

My family and my loved ones. I just want them to see me do well

On Pluggboidae

When me and Dae make a song he just knows what to do. He’ll let me tweak it to make our sound, and I love how we have a unique sound together.

Oher producers paving their own way

Shoutout Maru, @tblossom__, and @firemane_

Advice to someone who wants to start making beats

Watch a lot of YouTube videos! (laughs) Try to make your sound and pay attention to what other producers and artists are doing.
